Activities of the LMS Education Committee:
The Society is very conscious of the importance of its educational role, to ensure that when needed the views of the Society on mathematical educational issues can be made known to the decision makers and more generally to the public at large, to aid in the popularisation of mathematics, encouraging participation in events that help present mathematics to a wider audience, and to promote the public image of mathematics. The Education Committee of the Society has as its task to put this role into practice.
To illustrate what we do, here are some of the activities organised or supported by the Education Committee:
The following reports are available in PDF format. More recent LMS submissions can be found in the policy section of the website
Popular Lectures
For many years the Committee has organised Popular Lectures. They are
designed to be intelligible to a non-specialist audience, although
A-levels are useful. There are two Lectures and the event is held annually. The lecturers are always chosen for their mathematical
distinction and their ability to communicate. Initially held just in
London, the event is now also repeated at another location, which have so far included Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham.
Details of the 2009 lectures can be found here.
Videos and DVDs
Recordings have been produced of most of the Popular Lectures.
They are suitable for all who have a serious interest in mathematics.
That includes amateur mathematicians, sixth form mathematics students.
etc. Schools, Colleges and Universities find them invaluable.
Holgate Lecture Scheme
In 1996, as an innovation, the Committee started the Holgate Lecture
Scheme which aims both to reach those parts of the UK that the Popular
Lectures do not reach and to fill, in part, the gap in the provision of popular mathematical
support that seemed to exist between the Royal Institution Masterclasses, run in many districts
for 13 or 14 year olds, and the existing provision for adults.
Small Grants
This grant scheme is designed to enable and motivate interest and involvement in mathematics from KS1 to PG level and beyond, by:
Mathematical Activities supported have included the costs of refreshments for public lectures, materials for careers exhibitions, tutors’ costs for masterclasses and prizes for mathematical competitions. Applications for support of activities other than those listed are welcomed.

International Commission on Mathematical Instruction
In its role as the UK adhering body to the IMU (see International Affairs) the Society is also the UK link to the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction. Through its International Affairs Committee it nominates the UK representative to ICMI.
ICMI organises a four-yearly International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) and the London Mathematical Society works with the UK community to encourage participation and attendance. The next ICME will be held in July 2012 in Seoul, South Korea.
