These fellowships, named after Grace Chisholm Young, aim to provide some support when a mathematical career is interrupted by family responsibilities, relocation of partner, or other similar circumstance, making possible some continuous mathematical activity and so enabling the fellow to be in a position to apply for posts when circumstances allow. The Fellowship will give an endorsement of the holder's status as a mathematician, so that the break in formal employment should not prevent them from resuming a career as a mathematician at a later stage.

1. The holder of a Fellowship will have the title 'LMS Grace Young Fellow in Mathematics'
2. Each holder will be based in a specific Mathematics Department in a University or Research Institute in the UK; the host institute would receive a contribution of £500 from the LMS or other sponsor, and be expected to provide an email address, use of library facilities and IT facilities for correspondence and access to research literature.
3. Each holder will receive a personal research support fund of £500. A condition of the award is that the personal research support fund shall not be taxed or top-sliced by the host institution.
4. The normal duration of a fellowship will be one year.
5. We hope that holders will be able to apply for grants to attend conferences, summer schools etc. as if they were holders of academic or research positions, and that the host department will support such applications.
6. The host institution should provide an actively friendly, helpful and supportive environment for the fellow. According to local custom, the fellow might also be appointed to a visiting position in the host institution.
7. There shall be a specific individual in the host institution who would be personally supportive, talking to the holder regularly about her/his work and assisting the holder to find an appropriate academic position; this might be by help with applications and by setting up contacts with research and academic staff with a view to their applying for research grants on the holder's behalf.
8. The host institution should provide an opportunity for the holder to give seminars.
9. The holder might wish to give a short high level lecture course on her/his research area and this could be done, but with an appropriate fee, that is, at the normal level of payment for part time teaching.
10. On conclusion of the Fellowship the holder should send a report on activities to the Administrative Officer. The LMS would like the report to include details of the outcomes of the Fellowship, whether it aided development of the holder's career and any ways in which the scheme could be improved.
11. A report giving, with amounts, the general heads of expenditure of the personal research support fund should also be sent to the Administrative Officer. The Society shall be entitled to a refund of any unexpended portion of the personal research support fund."

Grace Chisholm Young Fellowships are administered by the Women in Mathematics Committee of the London Mathematical Society, however both men and women may apply. The Women in Mathematics Committee is made up of mathematicians with a wide spread of research interests, but it should not be assumed that they are familiar with the technical details of any particular area of mathematics. It is therefore important that the application for a Fellowship should be written for the general mathematician and not for the specialist.

Candidates newly arrived in a geographical region may seek advice from the Chair of the committee about appropriate institutions to approach. Applications are considered at meetings of the Women in Mathematics Committee in late February and in late September or early October. Deadlines for receipt of applications for these meetings are 31 December and 15 July. Decisions will be communicated shortly after these meetings.
