The London Mathematical Society is a membership society for the advancement, dissemination and promotion of mathematical knowledge. It is the major British learned society for Mathematics, with a nationwide membership, as well as several hundred overseas members.

The standing and usefulness of the Society depends upon the support of a strong membership, to provide the resources, expertise and participation in the running of the Society to support its many activities in publishing, grant-giving, conferences, public policy, influencing government, and mathematics education in schools.

Ordinary Membership is available to:

• Academic staff of a university or similar institution in the United Kingdom who are substantially engaged in teaching and research in mathematics (including all its diverse applications).

• Mathematicians in other occupations, whether or not they are currently employed, who have a higher degree in mathematics or who use mathematics in their work at a comparable level or whose work would benefit substantially from the Society's activities in promoting and extending mathematical knowledge.

• Others whom Council considers to have contributed substantially to the objects of the Society.

• Members of some overseas Mathematical Societies who are not normally resident in the UK may join under the terms of various Reciprocity Agreements. Candidates for reciprocity membership do not need to be proposed or seconded although Council reserves the right to consider each application individually.  A list of organisations with whom the Society has a Reciprocity Agreement is available here.

Associate Membership is available to research students and others at the start of a career in mathematics (including its applications), who are studying for or are within three years (full time equivalent and excluding any career breaks) of obtaining their postgraduate qualification in mathematics, or who are in the final year of an MMath course.

Council also has the authority to elect Honorary Members from distinguished mathematicians who are not normally resident within the United Kingdom.
