International Grants

Support for Mathematics in Africa

The Society currently provides support for mathematics in Africa under three headings:

  • AMMSI - African Mathematics Millennium Science Initiative

The Society awards grants for conferences in Africa organised, or supported, by AMMSI.

AMMSI is building mathematical infrastructure and networking in sub-Saharan Africa, and offers graduate assistantships, visiting lectureships, and conference support for the benefit of advanced students and young researchers in the mathematical sciences.

Grants must be used to cover the travel costs of postgraduate students, with mathematics degrees, to enable them to attend the conference.  Applications must be made by an institution or organization and application forms may be obtained from:

AMMSI Programme Director, School of Mathematics, University of Nairobi, P.O. Box 30197, GPO 00100, Nairobi, Kenya (email:  progoffice@ammsi.org  or ammsi@uonbi.ac.ke; tel: +254 786 234 678).

Young British and Russian Mathematicians Scheme

A limited number of grants are available each year to facilitate visits to and from Russia by young mathematicians, as follows:

  • Young Russian mathematicians visiting Britain for a few weeks to give a series of survey lectures on the work of their Russian seminar.
  • Young British mathematicians visiting Russia for a few weeks to give a series of survey lectures on the work of their school.

Grants are made to the hosts of the visits.

The grants are awarded under an agreement between the Society and the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Moscow Mathematical Society.
