NOTE: Since January 2010 authors of papers in the Bulletin, Journal and Proceedings will receive a web link with free access to the published PDF version of their paper. Hard-copy offprints can be ordered but will no longer be provided free of charge. |
This is the page for submitting your paper jointly to the three research journals with a common advisory board: the Proceedings, Journal and Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society.
Please note that you cannot choose to which journal your paper will be assigned; the Editors will make the final decision. Initially the papers are allocated among the three printed periodicals according to length. Longer papers are normally published in the Proceedings and those of medium length in the Journal. The Bulletin publishes survey articles, short research papers, book reviews and obituaries. If you are submitting a survey article, please begin the title of your paper with the words SURVEY ARTICLE in capitals so we may assign it to the Bulletin.
You may submit papers electronically as Postscript or PDF files. To do this you will need to complete a web form.
Papers sent this way are generally reviewed more quickly than papers sent by post but only if the PS or PDF file is printable and the form is completed accurately.
Before filling in the form, please read through this checklist of files and information you will need to have to hand when completing it:
You will be sent an acknowledgement once we have confirmed your file is printable. We may transfer your paper once your nominated Adviser has seen the file if he or she believes another Adviser would be better able to handle the paper but you will be informed and the paper will be given a new reference number. In all other respects, for advice on submitting a paper, please follow the Submission Guidelines below.
If you are submitting a revised version of your paper, please check that you have the reference number of the paper to hand and the name of the adviser who dealt with the previous version and ensure that you use a different filename for the PDF or PS file from the original version. There is a text box on the web submission form where you may note the changes made to the paper during its revision.
In general, these three journals receive an increasing number of submissions each year which compete for the limited space and our acceptance rate is low. The Editorial Advisers prefer not to consider multiple versions of the same paper before a decision on the first version is sent, particularly if the changes are minor. If you have a received a letter that firmly rejects your paper and does not mention that a resubmission would be considered, you would be advised to submit any revision of your paper to another journal.
We are sorry that we shall not acknowledge or open any files of papers submitted via e-mail. If you have a problem in completing the form or uploading the file, please send a brief e-mail to the Publisher, Dr Susan Hezlet, at hezlet@lms.ac.uk, describing the problem. Then submit your paper by post following the guidelines in the next section.
Alternatively, send three hard copies by post to:
Assistant Editor
London Mathematical Society
De Morgan House
57-58 Russell Square
London WC1B 4HS
England
Include a letter giving:
Provided that all of the necessary information described above has been received and the paper is legible, an acknowledgement will be sent within 21 days to the corresponding author. If you don't receive an acknowledgement, please check your files to ensure you sent all of the information before contacting the Assistant Editor. The corresponding author will also be sent a username and password that will provide access an Author Report which tracks the progress of the paper through the review process.
Papers should be submitted in English or French.
No paper that has been previously published, or which is being considered for publication elsewhere, should be submitted to the London Mathematical Society.
Nor may a paper that is under consideration by the London Mathematical Society be submitted elsewhere.
Papers will no longer be returned to authors on request. Authors should take care to keep a copy of all paperwork sent to the Society. The Society cannot accept responsibility for loss of manuscripts.
Authors are encouraged to prepare their manuscripts in the new "LMS" document class for LaTeX2e. The class file and its accompanying, concise author guide can be downloaded here. It is easy to convert papers to lms.cls from article.cls or amsart.cls, and the availability of an accepted final version prepared as a .tex file in lms.cls can significantly reduce the time to publication.
The preparation of the manuscript in either article.cls or amsart.cls may also possibly lead to a (small) reduction in the production time in comparison with other formats.
Please remember that only PDF or Postscript formats should be submitted electronically in the first instance. Even if you have prepared your paper using our class file, we do not want to receive the .tex files unless and until the paper has been finally accepted for publication by the Editors.
Please read the Instructions for Authors (Proceedings, Journal and Bulletin) for further information.
Upon acceptance, you will agree to assign copyright to the Society. See the sample copyright form.
Authors of accepted papers have the option (by paying a charge) to have their article published under ’Open Access’. For more information, click here.
You may continue to post electronic versions of your paper, up to and including the version initially accepted for publication, but excluding proofs, on any web page, server or electronic archive, provided that you give a journal reference to the published version ('to appear', or with published page numbers). You should also include a statement that the two versions are different.
