Online Summer LMS Graduate Student Meeting & Meet the ECR Committee Event

Registration is closed for this event
This meeting is intended as an introduction to the General Meeting on 2 July 2021, at which Emily Riehls (John Hopkins University) will give the LMS Lecture on Elements of ∞-Category Theory. All graduate students (and indeed any other mathematicians) welcome. The event will include a talk by Markus Land (Copenhagen), opportunities for Graduate Students to give 15 minute talks on their research to a general mathematical audience and a chance to meet the Early Career Research Committee and to discuss how the Society supports Early Career Researchers through its activities.

Programme - all timings are in BST.

13.00 Opening of Meeting

Markus Land (Copenhagen)

Infinity-categories in Algebra and Topology

Abstract: I will begin by recalling the notion of a category and their use in various aspects of mathematics. I will then indicate why categories do not capture all phenomena that one encounters in practice, and use this to give an informal picture of what an infinity category is and what sort of problems they allow to treat in an efficient way. I will make no precise definitions and rather focus on ideas and examples.
