Join us at the 77th British Mathematical Colloquium (BMC) for the LMS Society Meeting, open to all BMC participants—members and non-members alike. This annual meeting is an opportunity to connect with the LMS community and hear an engaging lecture from a leading mathematician.

Péter Varjú (University of Cambridge) Self-similar sets and measures Given a finite collection of contractive similarity transformations $f_1,\ldots, f_n:\mathbf{R}^d\to\mathbf{R}^d$, there is a unique compact set $K\subset \mathbf{R}^d$ with the property that $K=f_1(K)\cup\ldots\cup f_n(K)$. Such sets are called self-similar. Classical examples are the middle third Cantor set, the Koch snowflake and the Sierpinski carpet. Given a probability vector $p_1,\ldots,p_n$, there is a unique probability measure $\mu$ on $\mathbf{R}^d$ with the property that $\mu=p_1f_1(\mu)+\ldots+p_nf_n(\mu)$. Such measures are called self-similar. We will discuss recent developments about the dimension theory of these objects giving special emphasis to the role of random walk entropies. |
