Scholarship Network Grants

Aim of the Scheme

The central aim of this grant scheme is to support the ‘Pathways in Mathematics’ strategic goal of the LMS Strategy 2023–2028. As such it seeks to:
‘Promote the importance of mathematics and the provision of opportunities for those that wish to study and develop a career in mathematics and its applications’.
Its aim is to facilitate connection and networking among colleagues who are building a teaching and scholarship profile within higher education mathematics and its applications.

Guidelines

Overview:

The scheme will fund networking activities aimed at developing scholarship projects in general areas related to teaching and learning, and the wider student experience e.g. through regional or national meetings or events.

Key Information:

  • One grant of up to £1,000 is available per funding round.
  • About the award:
    • The grant may be used to contribute towards the costs of running remote or in-person events, including contributing towards caring costs for those attending.
    • The grant would normally be used to cover the expenses of speakers and/or participants (e.g., travel, accommodation, subsistence, caring, online support such as software licenses and subscriptions, and necessary technology support hardware to support the running of the event(s)).
    • The grant may not be used to pay speakers' honoraria or fees.
    • Further guidance about running hybrid events and how these can be supported by an LMS grant is available at https://www.lms.ac.uk/sites/default/files/inline-files/Supporting%20Hybrid%20Meetings%20%28updated%20July%202022%29.pdf

Network Requirements and Expectations for Activity:

  • The network should be made up of mathematical scientists who are working in at least three different higher education institutions and who have a common scholarly interest.
  • All three (or more) institutions making up the group must be in the UK, the Isle of Man, or the Channel Islands.
  • International institutions may not be included in the network.
  • It is expected that at least one of the events will be held in person.
  • It is expected that the meetings will be open to all.
  • Applicants are encouraged to consider how the network will be sustained in future.
  • The scheme will not award funding to supplement the finances of established conferences.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants can be any mathematical scientist based in the UK, the Isle of Man, or the Channel Islands.
  • Applicants must have, or be building, a teaching and scholarship profile in higher education mathematics and its applications.
  • Applicants must be at a career stage prior to Associate Professor, Reader, Professor or equivalent.
  • Applications should be made by a nominated ‘grant-holder’, who will be responsible for the use of the grant.
  • Applications must have the support of collaborators from at least two further institutions.
  • PhD students are not eligible to apply.
  • Non-LMS members will need to ask an LMS member to support the application. If you do not know an LMS member, you can find a list of LMS Representatives in UK universities here.

Grant Criteria:

  • Funds will not cover full economic costs. This means the grant is intended to cover specific direct expenses related to the activities, not the entire overhead or indirect costs of the institutions involved.
  • There should be genuine involvement from all three (or more) higher education institutions in the group.

Reporting:

  • As a condition of this grant, a mandatory academic and financial report must be submitted within 3 months after the funded activities have taken place. Further details on the content and format of these reports will be provided upon the award of the grant.
