AcadMathSci: Maths - The Unseen Engine Powering the UK Economy

AcadMathSci has published refined estimates of the economic contributions of the mathematical sciences to the UK in 2024. This is an updated version of previously published work which looks at findings for England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales as well as for the whole of the UK.

From the AcadMathSci website: the new analysis "finds that over 5 million people (15% of the UK workforce) worked in mathematical science occupations in 2024. Those workers directly contributed £489 billion to the UK economy in 2024 (19% of total UK gross value added) and were 27% more economically productive and 48% better remunerated than workers in other occupations. We thus estimate that growing the MS workforce by 1% could be worth £5 billion per year to UK plc".
