Professor Gerd Faltings awarded the 2026 Abel Prize

The London Mathematical Society warmly congratulates Professor Gerd Faltings on being awarded the 2026 Abel Prize, one of the highest honours in mathematics. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters recognised Faltings "for introducing powerful tools in arithmetic geometry and resolving long‑standing Diophantine conjectures of Mordell and Lang". His pioneering work has profoundly shaped modern arithmetic geometry, including his celebrated 1983 proof of the Mordell conjecture, a breakthrough that brought him international recognition.

Professor Faltings is a long‑standing member of the Editorial Board of Compositio Mathematica, which is owned and published by the Foundation Compositio Mathematica and the LMS.

We extend our sincere congratulations to Professor Faltings on this well‑deserved honour.
