LMS Honorary Members 2026

We are pleased to announce that the following LMS Honorary Members were elected at the Summer General Meeting on 3 July.

Honorary Membership of the Society recognises outstanding mathematicians who are based outside the UK and whose work has made a lasting contribution to the subject, as well as to the wider mathematical community. 

Professor Ruth Charney (Brandeis University, USA) is a pre-eminent figure in geometric group theory, particularly in the study of Artin groups. Her work has been extremely influential across a wide range of mathematics.

Professor Catharina Stroppel (University of Bonn and Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, Germany) is an internationally renowned mathematician whose pioneering work has transformed the field of representation theory.

Professor Akshay Venkatesh (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, USA) is a world leader in the Langlands programme, arithmetic geometry, and number theory. He is a universal mathematician distinguished by a unique combination of technical expertise and theoretical vision.
