LMS Outreach Lecturers: Call for Expressions of Interest

Deadline: 9 March 2026, 23:59 (GMT)

Introduction

The LMS is inviting expressions of interest from colleagues in UK higher education mathematics to become LMS Outreach Lecturers. The LMS Outreach Lecturers Scheme is a new initiative which aims to build a community of LMS Outreach Lecturers working across all the four UK nations.

As part of the LMS Strategy for 2023–2028, the Society aims to “promote the importance of mathematics and the provision of opportunities for those who wish to study and develop a career in mathematics and its applications.” In support of this goal, the LMS Education Committee is establishing a distributed network of dedicated LMS Outreach Lecturers who will deliver high-quality mathematical outreach to learners in primary, secondary and further education settings across the UK.

Building on the success of the LMS Holgate Lectures and Workshops and the LMS Mathematics Communication and Outreach Workshops schemes, this initiative will broaden the reach and impact of LMS outreach activities. Outreach Lecturers will offer talks and workshops that enrich mathematical education both within and beyond the curriculum. A particular focus will be on reaching schools and colleges with a high proportion of learners from disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring the programme has broad and meaningful impact.

LMS Outreach Lecturers may also be invited to contribute resources to an LMS repository, helping to share best practice and support sustainable outreach activity across the mathematical sciences community.

About the role

  • Appointments will be for two years, with a review after the first year.
  • Candidates should be working in UK higher education mathematics at postdoctoral level or beyond.
  • The outreach sessions should take place in schools or colleges.
  • No fee should be charged for the outreach sessions. The LMS will provide an annual honorarium to each LMS Outreach Lecturer, which should be used to cover any expenses associated with the delivery of the outreach session and/or travel.
  • LMS membership is expected.
  • LMS Outreach Lecturers will be selected via a competitive process.

Application and selection process

To apply, as a first step please send the following to Katherine Wright, Secretary to the Education Committee, at education@lms.ac.uk:

  • A short CV (maximum two pages)
  • A cover letter outlining:
    • What you could offer as an LMS Outreach Lecturer, including the age ranges of learners for whom your offerings would be suitable;
    • The educational value and experience your proposed sessions would bring;
    • Any evidence of existing connection with local schools and colleges.
    • How you plan to ensure that you are delivering outreach in settings with a high proportion of learners from disadvantaged background.

Successful candidates at the initial stage will be invited to attend a short online interview and give a mini workshop demonstration.

Further details about the scheme, including expectations of LMS Outreach Lecturers, are available here.

Launch event

To maximise the impact of the scheme, the LMS Education Committee plans to host a launch event in the spring/summer of 2026, bringing together key organisations working with teachers across the UK. This event will highlight the opportunities the scheme offers to schools, colleges and young people; foster connections between pre-university and university sectors; and showcase effective mathematical outreach.
