The Society is pleased to announce that Professor Martin Bridson FRS has been nominated as President‑Elect of the London Mathematical Society.
Professor Bridson received his PhD from Cornell University in 1991 and subsequently held positions at Princeton University, the University of Geneva, Imperial College London and the University of Oxford, where he is now the Whitehead Professor of Pure Mathematics. He served as Head of the Mathematical Institute at Oxford (2015–2018) and has been President of the Clay Mathematics Institute since 2018.
Professor Bridson’s research lies in geometric group theory and he has played a central role in the development of this field. His work spans a wide range of topics, including non‑positive curvature, decision problems in group theory and profinite rigidity. His monograph Metric Spaces of Non‑Positive Curvature (with André Haefliger) has been highly influential, helping to establish the foundations of the subject. His work has had a lasting impact across topology, algebra and related areas.
Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016 in recognition of his outstanding contributions to mathematics, he was awarded the LMS Whitehead Prize in 1999 and the LMS Pólya Prize in 2026. He has contributed significantly to the mathematical community through editorial work, conference organisation and service on committees and advisory bodies, and has long been a strong supporter of the LMS and its work.
