The LMS is delighted to announce the election of Professor Mark Chaplain FRSE as President of the London Mathematical Society. Elected in November 2024 for a two-year term, Professor Chaplain will take office from 21 November 2025.
Professor Chaplain is an internationally renowned leader in the mathematical modelling of cancer growth and treatment, an area he has been instrumental in establishing as an independent discipline within mathematical biology. Over the past three decades, he has developed influential models describing all major phases of solid tumour growth.
A pioneer of systems oncology, Professor Chaplain focuses on quantitative, predictive modelling of cancer dynamics. Since 2013, his research has expanded to include models of chemotherapy – especially cell-cycle-dependent treatments – radiotherapy and, more recently, intracellular signalling pathways and gene regulatory networks using PDE-based approaches.
Professor Chaplain is also a highly regarded lecturer who regularly delivers invited and plenary talks at international conferences, including many in medical and biological sciences. His ability to communicate complex mathematical ideas to wider audiences is widely recognised.
His multiscale modelling work, conducted in close collaboration with clinical partners, generates innovative mathematics and informs personalised cancer treatment and clinical decision-making.
Professor Chaplain received the LMS Whitehead Prize in 2000 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2003. He served as a Member-at-Large on LMS Council (2017–2019) and has long supported the global mathematical community, including roles as Secretary and Treasurer of the European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (1998–2002), President of the Society for Mathematical Biology (2005–2007), and President of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society (2011–2013).
