The London Mathematical Society (LMS) is recruiting for an Editor-in-Chief and a Deputy Editor-in-Chief for its membership publication, the LMS Newsletter.
If they wish, applicants may use a single application to be considered for both positions as the recruitment is taking place simultaneously.
About the positions
The Editor-in Chief is responsible for leading the editorial process for the publication of the LMS Newsletter. The Editor-in-Chief chairs the Editorial Board which commissions feature content and oversees the overall editorial direction of the LMS Newsletter.
The Deputy Editor-in-Chief is a new role which is being introduced to the Editorial Board to support the Editor-in-Chief and support their leadership of the editorial process.

Person specification
Applicants should be members of the LMS. The following characteristics, knowledge, and experience (or commitment to gain them) are advantageous to both positions:
- Dedication to the advancement of the mathematical sciences.
- Broad interests in research mathematics, and specific interest and expertise in relation to the LMS Newsletter.
- Experience of committee work.
- Sufficient time and commitment to fulfil the role.
- Sound judgement with the ability to listen to and welcome alternative opinions and experiences.
Application process
To be considered for one (or both) of the positions, applicants should submit a CV with a cover letter to newsletter@lms.ac.uk. The cover letter should address the following points:
- Which of the roles are you interested in? Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, or both?
- Describe your relevant experience and what you would bring to the role.
- What interests you about the role?
- What is your vision for the future of the LMS Newsletter?

The closing date for applications is 30 September 2026. It is anticipated that interviews with shortlisted candidates will take place in mid-late October.
Start dates
The Editor-in-Chief will take over the role from 1 June 2027. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will shadow the outgoing Editor-in-Chief for several months in early 2027 to prepare for the role.
The precise start date for the Deputy Editor-in-Chief is open to discussion, but it is hoped that the candidate will be in place around the start of 2027 in order to support the transition between the outgoing and incoming Editors-in-Chief.
About the LMS Newsletter
The LMS Newsletter is the Society’s membership publication. It is an important form of communication for the Society and is regarded highly by members of the Society.
Issues include news from the Society and the wider mathematics community, information about upcoming grant deadlines and events, featured articles and regular columns that are of interest to mathematicians, book reviews and obituaries.
Four issues of the Newsletter are published each year, with the print schedule set so that issues arrive at times that university common rooms are expected to be busy (February, May, September and December).
Members of the Society may choose to receive print copies of each issue of the Newsletter. The Newsletter is also published on the LMS website as a PDF.
