Submission of papers to the Journal of the London Mathematical Society

Journal

The Journal  welcomes submissions of papers research articles where the final published length is in the range

          18 PAGES OR MORE

For survey articles, see the submission page for the Bulletin.

Papers likely to be too short for the Journal may instead be submitted to one of the sister journals as follows.

Page estimate

To estimate the length of your paper you may use the LMS LaTeX class file. A dense page in the LMS style typically contains 45 lines of text.

A paper whose length is outside the allowed page range may be swiftly rejected.

Submitting your paper

You may submit a paper electronically as a single PDF file. To do this, you will need to complete a web form.

  • Have a single PDF version of your paper ready to be uploaded as part of the web form submission.

Please keep the .tex file that precisely corresponds to the PDF version that you are submitting. If your paper is accepted, we will require that particular version of the .tex file. Please do not send the .tex file at this time.

  • Have a look at the list of Editorial Board members and be prepared to select one whose mathematical interests are closest to the subject of your paper.

Link to the web form for submitting a new article

You will be sent an acknowledgement immediately via email, confirming receipt of your submission. If you do not receive such an acknowledgement within 1 hour, please write to lmsjournals@lms.ac.uk.

From 2018, ORCID iDs will be mandatory for all corresponding authors submitting a paper to the BulletinJournalProceedings and Transactions of the London Mathematical Society, and to the Journal of Topology.

Corresponding authors will be asked to provide their ORCID iD as part of the submission process; those without an ORCID ID will be shown how to obtain one. This can be done in just a minute or two via the website https://orcid.org.

Author guide

The London Mathematical Society has produced a Guide to Authors which gives an overview of the peer review process as it applies to the Bulletin, Journal, Proceedings and Transactions of the LMS. The guide, which is available here, covers common practices in peer review as well as specific procedures and explanations of the EditFlow paper management system.

Revised version

If you wish to upload a revision of a previously submitted article, please do not use the link above. Instead, use the status link contained in the email you received from us about your previous submission. If you cannot find the link, then write to us.

The Editors prefer not to consider multiple versions of the same paper before a decision on the first version is sent, particularly if the changes are minor. If you have received a letter that firmly rejects your paper and does not mention that a resubmission would be considered, you would be advised to submit any revision of your paper to another journal.

General Submission Guidelines

  • Papers should be submitted in English or French.

  • Each paper must be submitted exclusively to one journal.

  • No paper that has been previously published, or which is being considered for publication elsewhere, should be submitted to the London Mathematical Society.

  • Nor may a paper that is under consideration by the London Mathematical Society be submitted elsewhere.

  • By submitting your manuscript to this journal you accept that it may be screened for plagiarism against previously published works.

  • Authors should take care to keep a copy of all emails sent to the Society.

LMS class file

Authors may prepare their manuscripts in the ’LMS’ document class for LaTeX2e. The class file and its accompanying, concise author guide can be downloaded here.

Please remember that only the PDF file should be submitted electronically in the first instance. Even if you have prepared your paper using our class file, we do not want to receive the .tex files unless and until the paper has been finally accepted for publication by the Editor.

Please read the Instructions for Authors  for further information.

Ethical Policy

The London Mathematical Society has an ethical policy for its journals, including guidance on the expected behaviour of authors, referees and editors. The full policy can be found here.

Conditions for acceptance

Upon acceptance, you will agree to assign copyright to the Society. See the sample copyright form.

Authors of accepted papers have the option (by paying a charge) to have their article published under 'Open Access'. If published under the open access model, the paper will be distributed under the terms of either

For more information about open access, click here.

If your paper relies on colour figures (or references to colour) that cannot be properly interpreted when the paper is converted to greyscale for printing, then the LMS may charge you for the cost of printing in colour, or alternatively may print your paper in greyscale with a note added to the abstract, explaining that references to colour may not be meaningful in the printed version.

You may continue to post electronic versions of your paper, up to the version initially accepted for publication, on any web page, server or electronic archive, provided that you give a journal reference to the published version (with DOI, published page numbers, or 'to appear'). You should also include a statement that the two versions are different.

A summary of open access and archiving policies and publishing rights for the Journal can be found here.

On acceptance

To help you promote your own paper and make it maximally discoverable, cited and shared, Wiley has developed a Promotional Toolkit at http://wileyauthors.com/maximize with ideas specific to promoting individual papers.
