Artificial Intelligence

Updated November 2025

For convenience, this page contains extracts from the Society's Ethical Policy for Journals related to the use of Artificial Intelligences (AI), including Generative AI (Gen AI).

2. Author Code of Ethics

2.1. Authorship

2.1.5. Generative AI tools

Generative AI tools cannot be listed as an author as they are unable to be accountable for all aspects of the work.

For more information on the use of AI tools see 2.5.

2.5. Use of Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, and mathematical software

In addition to general mathematical software, authors preparing their article may use Artificial Intelligences (AI), including Generative AI (Gen AI) tools. When these tools are used responsibly, authors can maintain high editorial standards, and foster trust and transparency with readers.

2.5.1. Human oversight

Authors are responsible for checking the accuracy of their article before submission and this is especially important when using Gen AI tools.

Authors should check their work for plagiarism, as Gen AI tools may introduce content reproduced from other published sources. Authors must appropriately reference any supporting work on which the created output depends, and obtain appropriate permission where content is being re-used.

Authors are reminded that they, as named authors on the work, take full responsibility for the content of the work.

2.5.2. Transparency

Authors who use AI tools during the work must declare this. This includes the use of AI tools or software in generating ideas, performing calculations, constructing or verifying proofs, improving language, or in any other manner.

Where general mathematical software or other forms of computing have been used for substantial aspects of the work, this should also be declared.

The declaration should include the name of the AI tool or software and describe how it has been used to contribute to the work. The declaration should be included in the relevant point in the paper, or within the Acknowledgements section, as appropriate.

Where necessary, the journal may ask the author to disclose further details about the AI tool or mathematical software, and its use. The final decision about whether use of an AI tool is appropriate or permissible in the circumstances of a submitted manuscript or a published article lies with the journal’s Editor and the Society.

2.5.3. Terms and conditions

Authors should carefully review the terms and conditions, terms of use, or any other conditions or licenses associated with their chosen AI tool or software. Authors must confirm that this does not claim ownership of their content or impose limitations on its use. By reviewing terms and conditions for clauses such as “ownership,” “data reuse,” or “opt out” among others, authors can prevent unintended rights transfers.

3. Reviewer Code of Ethics

3.5. Use of Artificial Intelligences in peer review

Artificial Intelligences (AI), including Generative AI (Gen AI) tools, may only be used in very limited circumstances in the peer review process.

AI tools must not be used to carry out the review of a submitted manuscript. It is misconduct to upload a manuscript for review to an AI tool in any format.

Once a Reviewer has written their review, they may use an AI tool to improve the quality of the written feedback in their report. In doing so, they must only input the text of their review, and must not upload the submitted manuscript to the AI tool. This use must be transparently declared upon submission of the peer review report to the Editor.

4. Editor Code of Ethics

4.6. Use of Artificial Intelligences in peer review

Artificial Intelligences (AI), including Generative AI (Gen AI) tools, may only be used in very limited circumstances in the peer review process.

AI tools must not be used to review a submitted manuscript. It is misconduct to upload a manuscript for review to an AI tool in any format.

Once any feedback for the author is written, the Editor may use an AI tool to improve the quality of the writing before sending it to the Author. When doing so, they must only input their draft feedback, and must not upload the submitted manuscript to the AI tool.
