Mathematics Education Conference Grants

Objectives

Under the 'Mathematics Education Conference Grants' scheme, organisers of regular mathematics education conferences may apply for a grant (of maximum £2,000) to contribute to the travel/subsistence expenses of attendees of the event in question. Applicants may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Mathematical Association
• Association of Teachers of Mathematics
• British Society for the History of Mathematics
• National Association for Numeracy and Mathematics in Colleges
• National Centre for the Excellence of Teacheing in Mathematics
• British Colloquium of Mathematics Educators
• other professional not-for-profit associations.

Eligibility

Applications may be for any regular conference/event on the topic of mathematics education organised by a professional mathematical organisation (see examples above). The event/conference in question must be non-profit and based in the UK. Applications must be made by a conference organiser.

Rules of the scheme

1) The scheme is intended to provide opportunities for mathematics teachers to attend training which is specifically mathematical.  It is intended to facilitate mathematical professional development to allow teachers in UK schools/educational institutions to:

• Develop their subject knowledge
• Engage in a deeper understanding of how to develop mathematical thinking
• Appreciate the interconnectivity of mathematical topics
• Update themselves on mathematics curriculum reform
• Use technology when and where appropriate.

2) It is preferable that the grants stimulate interactions across the mathematical community and preference should be given to applications that do this.

3) At most, one grant should be made per applicant in any financial year. 

4) Where appropriate, LMS support should be recognised in publicity material.

5) The scheme will not cover attendance at exhibitions or courses/conferences organised by exam boards or commercial organisations.

6) The scheme will not cover the costs of supply teaching cover.

7) Grants will not be made retrospectively.

8) Grants should contribute to the costs of registration for the course and a proportion of the travel and subsistence expenses of attendees. 

9) After the grant is awarded, any subsequent distribution of funds must be organised directly by the awardee.

Value of award

Applications will be considered for a maximum of £2,000.

Application deadlines and decision dates

Four rounds of grant applications are considered per year, on a rolling basis. Decisions on applications are made by the LMS Education Committee at the nearest committee meeting held after an application deadline.

Applications for a particular round must be submitted before the deadline for that round.

Applications should be submitted well in advance of the activity or event for which funding is sought, and grants will not be awarded retrospectively. This means applications for funding for events or activities which take place before the decision date in a particular round will not be considered.
