I think what I consider my most rewarding experience as a mathematician is the possibility of applying mathematics to improve people’s lives. Recently I started working with social scientists, psychologists and social return evaluators as a pro-bono consultant and knowing that my analysis has allowed organizations like the Portuguese Red Cross or UNICEF to improve their programs, or helping school psychologists to create instruments to identify children at risk of being excluded from the school system or bullying, gives me a sense of purpose and fulfilment.
