The LMS welcomes the announcement of the government’s support for the establishment of a National Academy focused on the Mathematical Sciences in the Autumn 2023 statement. This is great news for the mathematical sciences community and recognises the importance mathematics plays across the sciences and in major technological advancements. It is important that, through an Academy, the whole community develops a single voice on issues affecting it, thus making it more influential with government, funding agencies, industry, the public and the media.
The LMS is pleased to have played a part, through the Council for the Mathematical Sciences, in starting the process to form a ‘proto-Academy’ and looks forward to supporting its bid for the funding announced yesterday.
