The London Mathematical Society is saddened to announce the death of Professor E. Brian Davies FRS, who died on 2 June 2025, at the age of 80.
Professor Davies was a highly esteemed member of the mathematical community and a member of the Society for nearly 52 years, having been elected to LMS membership on 21 June 1973. A leading figure in analysis, particularly in spectral theory, operator theory, and mathematical physics, his contributions were recognised through several awards, including the LMS Senior Berwick Prize in 1988 and the LMS Polya Prize in 2011.
He served with distinction as President of the London Mathematical Society from 2007 to 2009. His passing is a significant loss to the mathematical world, and he will be remembered for his intellectual rigor, his commitment to the advancement of mathematics, and his lasting impact on the LMS.
We send our deepest condolences to Professor Davies’ family. A longer obituary will appear in the LMS Newsletter.
