Dr Tony Gardiner 1947–2024

It is with great sadness that the LMS has learned that Dr Tony Gardiner passed away suddenly on 22 January. Tony was closely involved with the LMS for many years, including as a member of Council beginning in the 1990s, and particularly with the LMS Education Committee.

Tony devoted much time and work to the LMS over the years. He was a Member-at-Large of Council in 1992-1997 and 2015-2021, and was the LMS Education Secretary in 2011-2012. He served on numerous LMS committees and groups, most notably the LMS Education Committee, for which he was a member in 1996-2000 and 2011-2018, and Chair in 2011-2012. On this committee, he played a major role in producing the influential report ‘Tackling the Mathematics Problem’ in 1995, helped to set up the Cecil King Travel Scholarships in 2000, was the link for the Undergraduate Summer Schools in 2015-2017, and was a Holgate Lecturer in 2015-2022.

Tony was dedicated to mathematics education. Among his many contributions in this area, he founded the UK Mathematics Trust in 1996, initiated the Intermediate and Junior Mathematical Challenges, and created the Problem Solving Journal for secondary school students. He also wrote many educational articles and organised masterclasses, summer schools and educational conferences.

We send our deepest condolences to Tony’s family.
