Women in Mathematics Day

The Women in Mathematics Days are annual events funded by the London Mathematical Society for women in mathematics to meet together for a day of talks and discussion groups.  The talks are given by women mathematicians from a range of disciplines and who are at various stages in their careers.

The events are aimed in particular at postgraduates, final year undergraduates and those at an early stage in their career. The Women in Mathematics Day provides an opportunity to meet and talk with women who are active and successful in mathematics.  Participants from previous meetings have found this opportunity useful and beneficial.

While women are especially encouraged to attend this day, men are certainly not excluded from these events.

The programme usually starts with talks given by eminent women mathematicians from various positions and at different career stages.  Over lunch, there is a poster session and to encourage high quality submissions, the Society offers a prize for the best Women in Mathematics Day poster.  In the afternoon, postgraduate students usually give talks and these are followed by discussion groups.

The LMS Women in Mathematics Days are free for students and there is usually a nominal charge for all other participants.  Limited funds are also available to help with the travel costs of students attending the event.

The Women in Mathematics Committee annually invites individuals or groups to express interest in organising and hosting a Women in Mathematics Day.  These events are aimed at academic mathematicians (from at least postgraduate level and up and may include undergraduates).  The events are intended to help early career women mathematicians when considering the next stages in their careers and typically have included mathematical talks combined with panel discussions, social opportunities and networking.
