The London Mathematical Society expresses its deep concern over the current situation of Professor Mikhail V. Volkov, formerly of the Ural Federal University in Ekaterinburg. In the last months Prof. Volkov has been dismissed from his position, put under a criminal investigation, and subject to a travel ban. Meanwhile, he is facing serious health issues that have required hospitalisation.
On Wednesday 4 June, Professor Robin Wilson gave the annual London Mathematical Society/Gresham College Lecture, ‘Sum Stories: Equations and their Origins’, at Gresham College in London. The lecture was well attended, selling out in person. It explored questions such as ‘How long is the coastline of Britain?’ and ‘What is a rhombicuboctahedron?’. These and other intriguing questions were addressed as the lecture covered renowned mathematical equations and their history, spanning 4,000 years from early geometry to fractal art.
A recent Westminster Hall debate, chaired by Martin Vickers MP, saw Ian Sollom (St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire, Liberal Democrat) lead a discussion on the significant contribution of mathematics to the UK. The debate underscored the premise that a thriving mathematics ecosystem is fundamental to the Government's growth ambitions.
