LMS Summer Graduate Student Meeting: 29th June 2018
This meeting is intended as an introduction to the Society's General Meeting later in the day at which Lauren Williams (UC Berkeley) will give the Hardy Lecture 2018 on The positive Grassmannian and shallow water waves. All graduate students (and indeed any other mathematicians) are very welcome.
Speakers:
Dr Anna Felikson (Durham) 'Introduction to Cluster Algebras'
Abstract: Cluster algebras were introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky in 2000, since then they have found their connections and applications in numerous fields of mathematics and mathematical physics. In this talk we will define cluster algebras and consider their connections to triangulated polygons and Grassmannians Gr(2,n).
Professor Sibylle Schroll (Leicester) 'Geometric Models in Representation Theory'
Abstract: In this talk we will give an overview of some of the many ways in which surfaces are intrinsically linked to the representation theory of algebras. We will show how graphs embedded in surfaces are at the origin of exciting new connections of representation theory with other areas of mathematics such as homological mirror symmetry and cluster algebras.
Student talks (6 slots available)
Students are invited to give short talks (15 minutes) aimed at a general mathematical audience.
There are currently 6 free student slots available. A prize will be awarded for the best talk.
If you would like to give a talk, please email Anthony Byrne (lmsmeetings@lms.ac.uk).
